With one week to go before SHADOWLOCKED is published, I realised I hadn’t actually spent much time here telling you what it’s about. I’ve shared a synopsis and a sample chapter, but little else.
This is a far more personal novel than most I’ve written, and if you’ve already read the additional material in the limited hardback edition, you’ll understand why. Not only has this one taken a long time to get from my head onto the page (almost thirty years, incredibly), it’s also the summation of three very distinct story strands. A wise man once said (can’t remember who) that you’ve only finished a novel when, as the author, you don’t have any outstanding questions about the story you’re trying to tell. Why did character A do that? What made character B react in that way? What did character B do to character F that made character A lose their shit? and so on… Despite having a relatively small cast, the complications of the interpersonal relationships in SHADOWLOCKED took a LOT of unpicking.
So what kind of book is it?
Like pretty much everything I’ve ever written, it’s a book about a couple of ordinary people who find themselves in an extraordinary situation. Adam and Lucy have been married for several years, and all seems straightforward enough until, at the very beginning of the book, their car is forced off a bridge and Lucy dies. That’s when things begin to get really weird, not least because she then makes an impossible return to Adam’s life, and between them they have to unpick the events that led to the tragic accident which turned their worlds upside down and inside out.
So, I guess it’s a mystery. And it’s also a thriller. It might be a ghost story, but it might not. Whatever it is, the feedback so far has been fantastic, and I hope you enjoy it.
