Lots of stuff going on behind the scenes to get the limited edition hardcover of AUTUMN: AFTERMATH and the new, expanded edition of AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION published. Prices and release dates will be announced in the coming weeks, but today I thought I’d share the contents of THE HUMAN CONDITION with you. It’s turned into a monster – almost 40,000 words longer than the original edition.
The book will be available as an eBook, trade paperback and limited edition hardcover in May from Infected Books. Click here to register your interest (with absolutely no obligation) and click the link below to find out more about the book – the very last piece of the AUTUMN story. Continue reading
I wanted to let you know what was happening with a couple of forthcoming releases. Firstly, I’m working with Gollancz on the AUTUMN: AFTERMATH limited edition hardcover which will be published by Infected Books. Gollancz have been kind enough to allow me access to their designs in order that the new edition of the book can match the previous UK AUTUMN hardcover releases. There are a couple of legal and technical issues to get resolved before we go into production but I’m hoping (and don’t hold me to this) that the book will be released in late April/early May this year. You can register interest and keep up to date with developments by joining this mailing list. In the meantime, if you don’t want to wait, you can pick up the UK trade paperback edition here.
I thought this would be a good time to tell you about my plans for the new release of AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION, which I hope will also happen around the same time as AFTERMATH.
THE HUMAN CONDITION will be available as an eBook, trade paperback and limited edition hardcover, and it’ll differ significantly from the original Infected Books release from 2005. As well as new artwork from Craig Paton(you can see one of his initial draft cover designs here), it’ll also be a much longer book (of course, most of the content remains available free over at www.lastoftheliving.net). BREAKING POINT and KIERAN COPE will make their first appearances in print alongside BEGINNING TO DISINTEGRATE – a brand new short telling the backstory of the survivors based at the flats in AUTUMN: DISINTEGRATION. There will be one other major addition to the collection – a short which plays a hugely important part in the overall series – which I hope to tell you about shortly.
Again, if you want to keep up with news of these releases and register your interest in one/both of the limited editions with no obligations, please join this mailing list.
Congratulations to Dakota David Dingman from Florida who is the winner of the most recent TRUST giveaway. He gets a copy of the limited edition for his troubles, along with copies of the AUTUMN: AFTERMATH and AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION limited editions when they’re released later this year. More news about those releases soon.
And for those who haven’t yet read it, I’ve decided to leave the free version of TRUST online for a while longer. Head over to www.trustdavidmoody.com to read it
A quick reminder – you’ve got just under two weeks left to enter the latest TRUST giveaway. Just help me promote the free version of the book and you’ll be entered into a draw to win a copy of the limited edition of TRUST along with limited editions of AUTUMN: AFTERMATH and AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION when they’re released later this year. Just tweet about the book (use hashtag #trustdavidmoody) or post on Facebook (tag me so I catch your entry) before 31st January. See this recent post for more details.
Don’t forget – the collectors edition of TRUST is available at a reduced price for a limited time. More information here.
This post was prepared in advance so, if you’re reading this, the world obviously didn’t end last Friday (it obviously wasn’t going to anyway – when will people stop believing in fairytales and bullshit?) and I can keep writing about the apocalypse for a while longer yet! This is my last post of 2012 and I wanted to briefly look back, look forward, and say a few thanks.
It’s been an interesting year for me personally, to say the least. Various issues at home kept me away from work for far longer than I expected (pretty much from mid-March right the way through to mid-September), but since then my family and I have been in a far better place and, though you haven’t yet seen the benefits, I’ve actually been quite productive! All that said, I managed to get a few books out in the last year. I’m particularly pleased with AUTUMN: AFTERMATH, JOE & ME, and TRUST (which is now online in its entirety at www.trustdavidmoody.com).
As is often the way, some stuff didn’t happen. We managed to make very little progress with ISOLATION, for example, but I hope we’ll put that right early in the new year.
Some of the highlights of the year for me were spent in the company of other people. Wayne Simmons and I did a lot of joint events, and I enjoyed every minute of them (even the odd tumbleweed moments in far-flung branches of Waterstones, Wayne!). I’m already planning my schedule for 2013 with several events pencilled in including trips to Scotland and Spain. But I can’t look back at 2012 without mentioning the two occasions I got to meet and spend time with James Herbert (click here to remind yourself what happened). What an absolute honour.
So what’s coming in 2013? I’ve already talked a bit about what I’ve got planned. Top priority is to finish 17 DAYS (which you can read a little about here). Next up will be the first book in my new horror/science-fiction series THE SPACES BETWEEN, as well as STRANGERS (which is the closest I’m ever going to get to a vampire novel – and as I’ve already said, it’ll be a disease and depravity-filled read without a sparkle in sight).
I’m planning to continue the resurgence of INFECTED BOOKS in the new year with, as I recently mentioned, the AUTUMN: AFTERMATH limited edition hardcover, and the definitive reissue of AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION. If time allows, I’m also considering giving STRAIGHT TO YOU the same treatment as TRUST – i.e. total rewrite and online serialisation. Watch this space.
That’s about it for now. I just wanted to thank all the authors and other professionals I’ve worked with this year, and all the event organisers too. Huge thanks as always to Moody’s Survivors. Finally, sincere thanks to everyone who bought one of my books this year, or who encouraged someone else to read my work. I don’t say it enough, but I’m hugely appreciative.
Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever you do or don’t celebrate, best wishes. Have a fantastic holiday period and here’s to a brilliant 2013!
Five months seems to have flown by in five minutes. I’ve been serialising TRUST since the 23rd July and today the final chapters have been posted. The entire novel is now available for your reading pleasure at www.trustdavidmoody.com. The book will be staying online until the end of January at least, though I’ve not yet decided exactly how long. That’s assuming, of course, the world doesn’t end today!
I’ve really enjoyed revisiting TRUST and putting together this definitive version. Resurrecting Infected Books has been a pleasure, and I’ve a few more IB releases planned for 2013 including the AUTUMN: AFTERMATH hardcover, and a long-overdue re-release of AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION.
Right, nearly there with my recaps of the AUTUMN series in readiness for the UK release of AFTERMATH next week. Today I’m going to look at the various short stories I’ve written to expand and compliment the overall story over the years.
As I’ve already explained, AUTUMN started small but grew rapidly in size, its cast of characters growing with each new novel. Apart from jumping back in time to the beginning of the outbreak at the beginning of THE CITY, and the parallel events of PURIFICATION and DISINTEGRATION, it’s told in a largely linear way. That’s all well and good, but as I introduced each new character, I found myself wanting to go back and tell their individual backstories. To have done that within the books would have made them unnecessarily complicated, and so I came up with AUTUMN: ECHOES.
Originally appearing online only, these (very) short stories explained what had happened to minor background characters from THE CITY to get them from the end of the world to the city centre university where the survivors had grouped at the beginning of the book. It seemed to work so well I continued and did the same with some of the new characters from PURIFICATION too, and it was while I was putting together the third book that these ECHOES seemed to take on a life of their own. Here’s a brief extract from a scene near to the end of the book:
“Eight weeks ago this had been an intelligent young clothing store department manager with a bright future ahead of her. Now it was a mud-splattered, half-naked, emaciated collection of brittle bone and rotting flesh. Unlike the majority of the seething crowd, however, this one was beginning to exhibit signs of real control and determination. Unlike those which simply stood there vacantly or those which ripped and tore at the other corpses immediately around them, this body was beginning to think.”
With the US release of AUTUMN: AFTERMATH now just over a month away (UK and German releases to follow later in 2012) I thought it was about time I told you a little more about the book. I’ve deliberately not said too much, because this is a direct sequel to bothPURIFICATION and DISINTEGRATION and it was important for everyone to have had chance to read the preceding books first.
So, to whet your appetites, here’s the blurb…
“It’s been almost one hundred days since a killer disease wiped out 99% of the population. Three months since the dead reanimated. Survivors are few and far between now, and those who remain stick together to give themselves the best possible chance of continuing to stay alive. They are the last of the living.
A band of refugees has taken shelter in a medieval castle – a fortress that has stood strong for hundreds of years. Besieged by the dead, they only emerge when it’s absolutely necessary. As autumn turns to winter, however, the balance of power slowly begins to shift.
The unexpected appearance of survivors from another group changes everything. They bring choice, and an alternative way of life which is a far cry from the world everyone has been forced to leave behind. Society as we know it has crumbled beyond repair and things will never be the same again. Some people are ready to embrace this change, others can’t let go of the past. The choice is divisive.
Are we entering mankind’s final days? In the aftermath of the disease, will the last survivors destroy each other, or will the dead destroy them all?”
Just to clear up any confusion, this is very definitely the final book in the AUTUMN timeline. There are a few more short stories to share, but is the last chapter in the series. And yes, in case you’re wondering, the ‘survivors from another group’ mentioned in the blurb are from the island of Cormansey…
Next week I’ll introduce you to one of the key characters from the book, and those of you who read THE HUMAN CONDITION first time around might remember him!
As promised, the concluding part of the 18,000 word AUTUMN story – THE HUMAN CONDITION – is now available to read at www.lastoftheliving.net. I hope you enjoy it. Things have been a little busy here this week so I haven’t been able to post much, but bear with me. There’s plenty of good stuff coming very soon!
Later this month I’ll start telling you more about AUTUMN: AFTERMATH, the final book in the AUTUMN series. In the run up to the novel’s US release in March, there will also be more free fiction appearing. For those of you who read AUTUMN: THE HUMAN CONDITION first time around, you might have noticed that a couple of stories are still missing from www.lastoftheliving.net. You’ll find out why when you learn more about AFTERMATH…
Until then, come back next week for the concluding part of THE HUMAN CONDITION, and check back again later this week for more ISOLATION news.
