Late last year I had the pleasure of chatting with MICHAEL DAVID WILSON and BOB PASTORELLA, co-hosts of the excellent THIS IS HORROR podcast. I’ve appeared on the podcast quite a few times previously, and I know Michael and Bob well, so this felt more like a meet-up with friends than an interview. We talked for a looooong time but, thankfully, Michael has edited the conversation down to a more manageable length (though you can listen to the whole thing if you subscribe to the THIS IS HORROR PATREON).
I loved the fact that Michael and Bob were so positive about SHADOWLOCKED when we spoke, and the novel dominated the first part of our talk. If you remember, Michael was good enough to provide a cracking blurb for the book, saying that it was: “a poignant portrait of grief that quickly descends into a tale of paranoia, distrust, and hatred.” Bob has since mentioned it on Bluesky, saying SHADOWLOCKED is “a phenomenal book. Definitely something different from David that displays the full range of his powers.” Though it’s probably my most accessible novel, I’ve struggled to find an audience for SHADOWLOCKED yet, perhaps because it is such a stark change from my previous books. I’m very proud of it and, as a writer, it has given me an increased appreciate of the benefits of exploring other styles and genres. As a result, my writing plans for 2025 already include a thriller and a hard science-fiction novel. There will, of course, also be an inevitable dollop of dystopian mayhem thrown in for good measure.
In a wide-ranging conversation, we also talked about some of the other projects I’m working on, including DIRTY DAY and THE SPACES BETWEEN. I can’t remember if I dropped any spoilers into the chat, but we recorded very late on a Sunday evening (I’m in the UK, Michael’s in Japan, and Bob’s in the US – plenty of timezones to contend with), so there’s every chance I said a few things I shouldn’t have!
